Most of my experience in the Philadelphia area has felt very historical. Its streets, buildings, and people have always felt like a page taken out of the past when the forefathers of the United States sat and discussed its future or when a boxer from the city wanted to make a name for himself.
Both of these feelings are good. Both of these feelings have value to a city that has such strong roots in American History. The history of the city is tangible and thick. You almost believe sometimes that you can smell it.
But I think things are changing. The feelings I’ve gotten more recently, which feels much more modern, social, and open have been from visiting Philadelphia for the BlogPhiladelphia unconference. In fact, it felt much more like an event in California with Pennsylvania attendees. Many of the events that I’ve attended have had the right agenda but I always felt out-of-place, disjointed, and unwelcome. BlogPhiladelphia was just the opposite. I’m glad for this shift and I’m really embracing it. I am really looking forward to the next event that is happening in Philadelphia and I hope that I can be a major part of future events that happen.

19|Jul|2007 4Colin,
Having spent 12 years in Silicon Valley I concur. One of the reasons I returned to Philly was a sense that it’s time is coming again. Blog Philadelphia just confirms the trend I see everywhere here of a new public spirit and recognition that Philly has a lot to offer the world. We are stepping up to the plate(well maybe not the Phillies).
The Great Expectations project and numerous forums are bringing out this community spirit as are the local bloggers and podcasters.
As Mr. Rogers said “It’s a good time to be in the neighborhood.”
