Our very own Joshua Lane was just featured on unmatchedstyle.com today… Upon checking out the site, I discovered the featured redesign of knoxville.org. I found this site to be totally beautiful and vibrant and it made me want to get on a plane right this second and go to Knoxville. Then I thought… I wonder what philadelphia.org looks like (YUKKKK). I don’t want to get too rambly, but I was thinking about the brainstorming stuff that happened at Junto last night and I suppose the putting Philly on the map and giving back to the community resonated with me the most. It got me thinking that with our collective creative skills, perhaps we could come up with an amazing Philly site that wasn’t about just visiting, but making this your new home with real info about jobs / neighborhoods / community / etc.
The other thing that occurred to me, based on last night’s Junto, was the idea of reaching out to students, and making them more aware of all of the opportunities that are available to them right here, right now. Additionally, it’s only natural to want to move to a new city when you are young (and whenever), so how can Philly appear to be an attractive city to draw creative personalities from all over the country (and the world).
Also, I don’t want to step on any toes… I know there are some great sites out there now like Uwishunu – but maybe this is more focused on the community we are creating?
Are you getting what I am putting out there? Let’s discuss.

29|Jul|2007 1why not tie the two ideas together…if we were to create some sort of Creative Scholarship Foundation (or plant the idea of one with another organization), and have the entrance for consideration with the scholarship be a design for a website/blog about why they think Philadelphia is a good place for them to learn and perfect their craft.
In time we could end up with a family of these sites better visually representing Philadelphia, a bunch of tuned-in students contributing their thoughts to the mix. Win, win.

I think that sounds like a good idea IF you aim it at local students as a way of preventing creative brain drain. I’m not sure students who aren’t from Philly would be able to make a site about this city. Great idea to present to local cultural orgs and universities.
I know when I was a student I could have used something to let me know I was wanted/had opportunities in Philly. So many area orgs and sites seemed to always be geared towards mid-career pros.
